This work provides an insight into how forces on membrane molecules propagate to the lipid bilayer components to generate specific nanomechanical responses. In addition, the consistent results obtained using different methodologies demonstrate that the presented force-probing assays and the theoretical model can serve a combined testbed to investigate nanoscale mechanics of the living cell membrane.Photoluminescence (PL) was used to estimate the concentration of carbon in GaN grown by hydride vapor phase epitaxy (HVPE). The PL data were compared with profiles of the impurities obtained from secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) measurements. Comparison of PL and SIMS data has revealed that apparently high concentrations of C and O at depths up to 1??m in SIMS profiles do not represent depth distributions of these species in the GaN matrix but are rather caused by post-growth surface contamination and knocking-in impurity species from the surface. In particular, PL analysis supplemented by reactive ion etching up to the depth of 400?nm indicates that the concentration of carbon in nitrogen sites is below 2-5?×?1015?cm-3 at any depth of GaN samples grown by HVPE. We demonstrate that PL is a very sensitive and reliable tool to determine the concentrations of impurities in the GaN matrix.The aim of this review was to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness of behavioural interventions to reduce HIV-related risk behaviours among key populations people who inject drugs, female sex workers, men who have sex with men and transgender in Nepal over the last two decades. Using four electronic databases, we performed a systematic search of the literature on HIV interventions implemented in Nepal and published from January 2001 to December 2016. In addition, grey literature was also scrutinised for potential articles. The search focussed specifically on behavioural interventions (peer education and HIV testing services) targeted for key populations. Random-effects models were used to calculate the pooled odds ratio for dichotomous outcomes (condom use in last sex or unsafe injection practices), pooled HIV prevalence and subgroup analyses by age groups and epidemic zones in Nepal. Forty-three studies with 15,642 participants were included (people who inject drugs 7105; men who have sex witherventions in Nepal have effectively reduced risky behaviours among female sex workers, men who have sex with men and transgender over the last two decades but not among people who inject drugs. Statistical learning could contribute to the acquisition of vocal sequences, and we investigated the nature and extent of sequence learning at various levels of song organization in the Bengalese finch, Lonchura striata var. domestica. This study presents a novel temperature sensing technique based on afterglow and optically-stimulated luminescence (OSL). The dependence of afterglow photoluminescent intensity on the environmental temperature of zirconia (ZrO2) phosphor is examined to validate its use as a sensing probe. In addition, assuming the measurement in deep-part of human body, we have applied the information gathered from our validation to observe OSL from the ZrO2 by irradiation with near-infrared laser through a bone sample. This study demonstrates an alternative medical application of phosphor, and introduces an elemental-technology for the temperature sensing.We observed strong positive relationships between soil properties and forest dynamics of growth and mortality across twelve primary lowland tropical forests in a phosphorus-poor region of the Guiana Shield. Average tree growth (diameter at breast height) increased from 0.81 to 2.1?mm?yr-1 along a soil texture gradient from 0 to 67% clay, and increasing metal-oxide content. Soil organic carbon stocks in the top 30?cm ranged from 30 to 118 tons C ha-1, phosphorus content ranged from 7 to 600?mg?kg-1 soil, and the relative abundance of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi ranged from 0 to 50%, all positively correlating with soil clay, and iron and aluminum oxide and hydroxide content. In contrast, already low extractable phosphorus (Bray P) content decreased from 4.4 to less then 0.02?mg?kg-1 in soil with increasing clay content. A greater prevalence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi in more clayey forests that had higher tree growth and mortality, but not biomass, indicates that despite the greater investment in nutrient uptake required, soils with higher clay content may actually serve to sustain high tree growth in tropical forests by avoiding phosphorus losses from the ecosystem.
